Duties

Help
  • Plans, coordinates, and/or conducts all aircrew and flight inspection technician familiarization training for assigned military personnel in accordance with FAA approved courses of study and the Aircrew Training Program (ATP).
  • Continually monitors the maintenance program, looking for trends, which could adversely affect the operational mission of facilities worldwide by causing extended down time or create a safety hazard to the military and civilian flying public.
  • Performs airborne flight inspection of ground based National Airspace System (NAS) navigational aids (NAVAIDS) using airborne electronic flight inspection equipment and specialized test, measurement, and diagnostic equipment (TMDE).
  • Performs comprehensive Air Traffic Service (ATS) equipment quality assurance inspections at Army airfields and facilities worldwide.
  • Monitors the operational status of navigational aids, landing, lighting, and communications systems throughout the Army and establishes and maintains comprehensive flight inspection report data for all Army owned systems.
  • Coordinates initial and follow-on Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) training from inception through to certification as a flight inspection technician.

  • The duties of this position require the incumbent to possess or obtain and maintain a valid state Driver's License in one of the 50 U.S. states or possessions to operate vehicles.
  • This position is a Key position and shall not be vacated during an emergency or mobilization. The incumbent must be exempted from recall to active duty and will receive training to ensure sustaining operations during mobilization.
  • Appointment may be subject to a suitability or fitness determination, as determined by a completed background investigation.
  • Must have been granted Maintenance Certification Authority on Army air traffic control navigational aids (NAVAIDS), landing, and/or communication systems.
  • Missions may include deployment to locations categorized as a hostile environment (i.e. war zone, high terrorist threat, etc.)
  • Must possess and maintain an annual Army Class III Flight Physical Qualification IAW AR 40-501.
  • Must perform extensive temporary duty travel up to 40% of the time.
  • The incumbent must be exempted from recall to active duty and will receive training to ensure mission accomplishment of sustaining base operations during mobilization.
  • This position has been designated "Mission Essential".
  • This is an obligated position. An obligated position is one to which an employee has statutory restoration rights or entitlement based on active military service, recovery from a compensable injury, or return rights based on an overseas tour.

In order to qualify, you must meet the experience requirements described below. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; student; social). You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. Your resume must clearly describe your relevant experience; if qualifying based on education, your transcripts will be required as part of your application. Specialized Experience: One year of specialized experience which includes using airborne flight inspection equipment and specialized test, measurement, and diagnostic equipment (TMDE) to inspect air safety of aircraft operations within national airspace; facilitating the aeronautical evaluation and certification of Air Traffic Service (ATS) units, equipment, and ATS Maintenance Technicians; and experience enforcing actions to correct instances of non-compliance with Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) and Army regulatory guidance.. This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the next lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-12).

Some federal jobs allow you to substitute your education for the required experience in order to qualify. For this job, you must meet the qualification requirement using experience alone--no substitution of education for experience is permitted.

OPM Qualifications Standard for Aviation Safety Series, GS-1825 Minimum Eligibility Requirements:
1. Not more than two separate incidents involving Federal aviation regulations violations in the last 5 years;
2. Valid State driver's license;
3. Fluency in the English language;
4. No chemical dependencies or drug abuse that could interfere with job performance; and
5. High school diploma or equivalent.

Medical Requirements: Applicants must be physically able to perform the duties of the Aviation Safety Inspector position in a safe and efficient manner, with or without a reasonable accommodation. The minimum medical requirements include the following requirements:

1. Have good distant vision in each eye and be able to read, without strain, printed materials the size of typewritten characters (glasses and contact lenses permitted);
2. Have the ability to hear the conversational voice (hearing aid permitted); and
3. Not have any physical condition that would cause them to be a hazard to themselves or others that would interfere with their ability to fly as passengers in a variety of aircraft.

Time in Grade Requirement: Applicants who have held a General Schedule (GS) position within the last 52 weeks must have 52 weeks of Federal service at the next lower grade or equivalent (GS-12).
