Summary

This position is located in the Emergency Department, Division of Nursing Services at the Gallup Indian Medical Center in Gallup, NM.   • Performs a range of personal nursing care to include feeding, bathing, lifting, and turning patients. Transfers/accompanies stable and uncomplicated patients via wheelchair or stretcher to other areas of the hospital for further care, admission, or testing.
  • Assists RN with assessment of patients by obtaining vital signs, including orthostatic blood pressures and pulses, and weights. Performs EKG's by attaching leads to patient. Connects patient to central monitoring equipment including; thermometry, oxygen saturation, cardiac and other monitoring leads, non-invasive blood pressure monitoring equipment.
  • Assists with the application of various splints, casts, and other orthopedic equipment necessary for the treatment of various orthopedic injuries. Assists medical and registered nursing personnel with set up for sterile procedures such as suturing, spinal taps, insertion of chest tubes, and urinary catheterizations. Assists medical and registered nursing staff with cleaning, irrigation, and dressing of wounds.
  • Assures that patients are properly logged into the ER log through RPMS and patient forms are instituted. Registers for medical records of patients receiving care in the Emergency Department.
  • MVO of the ambulance to transport patients with patient care staff to other facilities or to the airport. Driver assists the accompanying medical personnel in loading, unloading, and securing patients.

Qualifications

To qualify for this position, your resume must state sufficient experience and/or education, to perform the duties of the specific position for which you are applying.

Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; social). You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer and part time experience. You must clearly identify the duties and responsibilities in each position held and the total number of hours per week.

INDIVIDUAL OCCUPATIONAL REQUIREMENTS:
Specialized Experience (for positions at GS-4 and above): Qualifying specialized experience includes nonprofessional nursing care work in a hospital, outpatient clinic, nursing home, or other medical, nursing, or patient care facility, or in such work as that of a home health aid performing duties such as:

  • Providing personal nursing care such as providing pre- and post-operative care.
  • Support duties for diagnostic and technical treatment procedures, such as setting up and operating special medical equipment and apparatus.
  • Caring for mentally ill patients, including observing, recording, and reporting changes in their behavior, and providing reassurance and encouragement.
  • Assisting surgeons and registered nurses in operating room activities, including passing instruments, maintaining sterile conditions, and draping and positioning patients.
In addition to the Occupational Requirements, you must also meet the Minimum Qualifications stated below.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
GS-05: Applicants must successfully completed 4 years of education leading to a bachelor's degree with course related to the occupation -OR- Your resume must demonstrate at least one (1) year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the next lower grade level in the Federal service obtained in either the private or public sector performing the following type of work and/or tasks: Performing a range of diagnostic support duties in a hospital, outpatient clinic, nursing home or other medical, nursing, or patient care facility which includes taking and recording vital signs; collecting and labeling specimens; making visual observations of patient's condition; assembling equipment and supplies in preparation for treatment; maintaining patient information and data in electronic health records; and maintaining patient confidentiality in accordance with organizational policies.

Combining Experience and Education: Equivalent combinations of successfully completed post-high school education and experience are also qualifying.
  • For GS-5 level positions, only education in excess of the first 60 semester hours of a course of study leading to a bachelor's degree is creditable toward meeting the specialized experience requirements. Two full academic years of study, or 60 semester hours, beyond the second year is equivalent to l year of specialized experience.
Time In Grade
Federal employees in the competitive service are also subject to the Time-In-Grade Requirements: Merit Promotion (status) candidates must have completed one year of service at the next lower grade level. Time-In-Grade provisions do not apply under the Excepted Service Examining Plan (ESEP).
